What is the Canada eTA?
- The eTA is for air travel only. If you arrive by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship), you generally do not need an eTA from an eTA-required country.
Who is eligible?
Documents required
- A valid e-passport (biometric passport) from an eTA-required country or territory.
- A valid email address to receive your eTA authorisation.
- A method of payment for the eTA fee (credit or debit card).
- Your travel itinerary details (helpful, but not mandatory).
Application steps
- Complete the online application with your personal and passport details.
- Answer the eTA eligibility questions.
- Pay the eTA application fee securely online.
- Receive your eTA authorisation by email, typically within minutes.
Fees & processing time
- Fee: CAN$7.00 official government fee (payable online by credit or debit card).
- Processing time: most applications are approved within minutes. If additional documents are needed, IRCC will email you within 72 hours.
Validity & conditions
- Valid for up to 5 years from approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
- Multiple entries during the validity period.
- Stays of up to 6 months per visit.
- If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new eTA.
